<p>The <strong>Church of St. George</strong> is undoubtedly the most important stop on the Fener and Balat walking tour. Located within the historic compound of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, this site represents the spiritual heart of the Eastern Orthodox Church and remains an active center of worship and administration.</p>

<p>As visitors enter the Patriarchate grounds, they are greeted by a serene courtyard surrounded by traditional wooden buildings that house the Patriarchate’s offices and guest quarters. At the center stands the Cathedral Church of St. George. </p>

<p>From the outside, the church’s design may seem modest compared to the grand churches of the past, but its interior is breathtaking and filled with priceless treasures that date back centuries. In particular, the icon wall, carved from wood and gilded, is one of the best examples of its kind.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Dress Code and Etiquette</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="609" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-009-Church-of-St-George-SRHT.jpg" alt="The Church of St. George is located in the middle of a group of buildings as part of the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul." class="wp-image-137" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-009-Church-of-St-George-SRHT.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-009-Church-of-St-George-SRHT-300x178.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-009-Church-of-St-George-SRHT-768x457.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p><strong>The Church of St. George</strong> has a dress code very similar to Istanbul&#8217;s mosques. Women wearing sleeveless tops are advised to bring a shawl to cover their shoulders, and both men and women should avoid wearing shorts. These guidelines ensure that visitors respect the sacred atmosphere of the site.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re visiting during the summer months, you might consider packing a pair of practical outdoor trousers. This way, you can temporarily wear them during your visit and continue your Fener Balat walking tour in shorts.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">A Seat of Eastern Christianity</h2>

<p>For nearly a thousand years, <a href="https://www.doaks.org/events/byzantine-studies/other-programs/hagia-sophia-the-history-of-the-building-and-the-building-in-history" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Hagia Sophia</a> was the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians. However, in the 140 years following the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Patriarchate operated in several different churches.</p>

<p>It finally settled at its current location in the late 16th century. Today, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecumenical_Patriarch_of_Constantinople" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Patriarch of Constantinople</a> continues to reside and officiate liturgies here, holding a position comparable to that of the Pope in Rome within the Orthodox tradition.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Treasures of the Church of St. George</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="583" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-147-Saint-George-Serhat.jpg" alt="The Church of St. George in the Fener district of Istanbul has a striking beauty as the cathedral church of Eastern Christianity." class="wp-image-45" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-147-Saint-George-Serhat.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-147-Saint-George-Serhat-300x171.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-147-Saint-George-Serhat-768x437.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p><strong>Inside the Church of St. George</strong>, visitors will find remarkable relics and sacred items that have survived the turmoil of centuries. Among the most revered are the remains of <strong>three great church fathers</strong>:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="https://istanbulclues.com/st-john-chrysostom-life-story/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Chrysostom</a> <strong>(347–407)</strong> – the most important cleric in the history of Constantinople and was known for his eloquent sermons,</li>

<li><strong>Gregory the Theologian (329–390)</strong> – one of the most influential theologians of the early church,</li>

<li><a href="https://www.oca.org/saints/lives/2026/01/01/100003-saint-basil-the-great-archbishop-of-caesarea-in-cappadocia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Basil the Great</a> <strong>(329–379)</strong> – a leading figure in the development of monasticism. He is especially known for his regulation of the monasteries in Cappadocia.</li>
</ul>

<p>Their relics are preserved within the church and are venerated by Orthodox Christians from around the world. The stunning <em>iconostasis</em> (icon wall), richly decorated with gilded carvings and sacred icons, dominates the interior and is a true masterpiece of Orthodox art.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Seeing the Patriarch at the Church of St. George</h3>

<p>The Patriarchate remains an active place of worship, and visitors may occasionally witness the Ecumenical Patriarch leading a service.</p>

<p>These moments are especially moving for those who attend the Fener and Balat walking tour, as they offer a unique window into the living traditions of Christianity in Istanbul.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;d like to <strong>see the Patriarch at the Church of St. George</strong>, you might want to time your visit for special occasions, such as Easter. He personally leads the services at this time every year.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<p>The Church of St. George is more than a historic monument; it is a living testament to Istanbul’s layered religious heritage. Visiting this sacred place allows travelers to connect with a tradition that has endured for nearly two millennia.</p>

<p>Located on the scenic shores of the Golden Horn, <strong>Kadir Has University</strong> is one of the most charming starting points for exploring Fener and Balat. Visitors who arrive a little early for our tour often enjoy relaxing on the benches at the university entrance platform, which offers an incredible panoramic view of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Horn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden Horn</a>.</p>

<p>Reaching the university is easy: simply take the <strong>T5 tram from Eminönü</strong>, near the Spice Bazaar, and get off at <strong>Cibali station</strong>, just two stops later. From there, the university entrance is only a short walk away (cross the road with the train station behind you).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Tobacco Factory of the Ottoman period</h2>

<p>The building, originally constructed in the <strong>19th century by the Ottoman Empire</strong>, was once a bustling tobacco factory. Thanks to its prime location on the waterfront, the factory benefited from easy ship transportation. </p>

<p>After ceasing operations in the late 20th century, the building was purchased and restored by the <a href="https://kadirhasvakfi.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kadir Has Foundation</a> in 1997. During the restoration, the exterior was carefully preserved in its original style, while the interior was completely modernized to suit the needs of a prestigious university.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Kadir Has University Today</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="680" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-143-Kadir-Has-University-Serhat.jpg" alt="Kadir Has University, the meeting and starting point of the Fener Balat walking tours, is actually a 19th-century Ottoman-built tobacco factory." class="wp-image-41" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-143-Kadir-Has-University-Serhat.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-143-Kadir-Has-University-Serhat-300x199.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2023-143-Kadir-Has-University-Serhat-768x510.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>This combination of history and contemporary design makes <strong>Kadir Has University</strong> an exceptional landmark. The building also houses the <strong>Rezan Has Museum</strong>, where archaeological artifacts from <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/anatolia-map-history-facts-asia-minor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anatolia</a> (aka Asia Minor) and remains of a Byzantine cistern can be viewed.</p>

<p>As a tour guide with extensive experience in Fener and Balat, I often meet my guests at the university’s courtyard to introduce the neighborhoods’ rich history. From here, we move toward the nearby <strong>Cibali Gate</strong>, one of the historic entrances to Constantinople.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>How did gentrification begin in Fener and Balat?</strong></p>

<p>After the university opened, gentrification began in Fener and Balat, neighborhoods long forgotten since the late Ottoman period. As a result, Fener and Balat have become increasingly popular over the past two decades, adorned with restaurants and cafes.</p>

<p>When these restaurants and cafes first opened, they were small businesses, lacking large budgets. However, drawing inspiration from global examples, they invited street artists to the neighborhood and adorned all the walls with pastel-colored murals.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1216" height="736" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-001-Atolye-Kafasi-SRHT.jpg" alt="During the Fener and Balat walking tour, we see various street arts and wall paintings, like in this cafe." class="wp-image-85" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-001-Atolye-Kafasi-SRHT.jpg 1216w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-001-Atolye-Kafasi-SRHT-300x182.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-001-Atolye-Kafasi-SRHT-1024x620.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-001-Atolye-Kafasi-SRHT-768x465.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1216px) 100vw, 1216px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Wall Art at Atolye Kafasi Cafe in Cibali</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>This led to the district&#8217;s retro cafes and street art reaching a wide audience on social media, creating a trend that has continued to grow. Fener and Balat has been one of the most shared places on Instagram by Istanbulites for years.</p>

<p>Over time, this trend has also influenced tourists, and we see that Fener Balat is now a rising tourist destination. However, when we rewind the story to the beginning, we see the domino effect that began with the conversion of a tobacco factory into a university, triggering a cultural movement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Conclusion</h2>

<p>If you would like to experience this remarkable setting and explore the hidden treasures of Istanbul’s most cosmopolitan districts, consider joining my <strong>private guided Fener and Balat walking tour</strong>. This immersive experience will allow you to step off the typical tourist route and enjoy a deeper understanding of Istanbul’s vibrant past.</p>

<p><strong>The Church of Hagia Theodosia</strong>, known today as <strong>Gul Mosque</strong>, is one of the most atmospheric stops on the Fener and Balat walking tour. Built in the 11th century, the building was dedicated to <strong>St. Theodosia</strong>, a Byzantine woman who became a martyr during the early years of the <strong>Iconoclasm period</strong>.</p>

<p>In the 8th century, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Leo-III" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emperor Leo III</a> ordered the destruction of icons, believing they led to idolatry. Theodosia, a devout iconophile, resisted imperial soldiers who attempted to remove an icon of Christ from Constantinople’s <a href="https://www.byzantium1200.com/chalke.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chalke Gate</a>.</p>

<p>She was killed during this act of defiance and was later canonized as a saint by the icon-supporting wing of the Byzantine Church. This church was constructed centuries later in her memory, and it remains one of the few surviving Byzantine monuments in Istanbul.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Church of Hagia Theodosia (today Gul Mosque)</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002.jpg" alt="Gul Mosque (or the old Hagia Theodosia Church) is one of the important stops of Fener Balat walking tours today." class="wp-image-123" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002-300x200.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002-768x513.jpg 768w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002-680x455.jpg 680w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-008-Gul-Mosque-Shutterstock-002-960x640.jpg 960w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Walking into Gul Mosque is like stepping back in time. Unlike the bright interiors of Ottoman mosques, <a href="https://istanbulclues.com/istanbul-byzantine-churches/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Byzantine churches</a> are typically dim and almost mysterious. The low lighting and thick stone walls of <strong>the Church of Hagia Theodosia</strong> instantly transport visitors into the Middle Ages.</p>

<p>On my Fener and Balat tours, we use this quiet atmosphere to talk about the dramatic history of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Iconoclasm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Byzantine Iconoclasm</a> and how it shaped the empire’s religious landscape.</p>

<p>I have been guiding tours through Fener and Balat since 2008, and Gul Mosque has always held a special place in these walks. For years, an elderly caretaker—an ex-taekwondo champion—would open the doors for us even when the building was closed. </p>

<p>Sadly, he passed away a few years ago, making access to the mosque less predictable. However, we are still often able to enter, and when we do, we usually have the building entirely to ourselves.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">The Dome of Gul Mosque is Worth Seeing!</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-007-Gul-Mosque-Dreamstime-001.jpg" alt="The interior of the Gul Mosque still reflects the atmosphere of a medieval Byzantine church" class="wp-image-122" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-007-Gul-Mosque-Dreamstime-001.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-007-Gul-Mosque-Dreamstime-001-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-007-Gul-Mosque-Dreamstime-001-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>The name “Gul Mosque” (meaning <em>Rose Mosque</em>) is believed to date back to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, when soldiers reportedly found the church adorned with roses. This detail adds a poetic note to an already mystical setting.</p>

<p><strong>The dome of Gul Mosque</strong> was rebuilt by the Ottomans after it collapsed in an earthquake. The geometric ornamentation of the dome, faithful to the original, is particularly striking.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the arches supporting the dome on all four sides bear the Star of David, as seen in the image above. While the presence of a Jewish symbol may surprise visitors, this star is a common sight in Ottoman mosques.</p>

<p>The Ottomans considered Jews and Christians to be people of the book and did not exclude their traditions. While there were no human-like statues or paintings in the mosques, there were motifs bearing the traces of many different cultures.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center"><strong>Conclusion</strong></h3>

<p>The Church of Hagia Theodosia is one of the few places in Istanbul where visitors can still feel the authentic atmosphere of a medieval Byzantine church. Its dimly lit interior, deep historical roots, and tranquil setting make it a truly unforgettable stop on the <strong>Fener and Balat walking tour</strong>.</p>

<p>The <strong>Church of St. Nicholas</strong> is undoubtedly one of the most special stops on the <strong>Fener and Balat walking tour</strong>. Even locals are often unaware of this small, centuries-old church tucked away beneath street level. As you step through the gate and enter the courtyard, you instantly feel as though you’ve left the modern city behind and crossed into another dimension.</p>

<p>This <strong>hidden gem</strong> holds a unique place in the tour. Thanks to the warm hospitality of <strong>Mrs. Doka and her husband</strong>, who have been the caretakers of the church for over 25 years, we are able to visit the church in a truly private setting. When we make a reservation in advance, they open the doors exclusively for our group. This allows our guests to enjoy a serene and intimate experience that the average tourist in Istanbul rarely gets to have.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">The Church of St. Nicholas (Cibali)</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-004-Saint-Nicholas-Church-SRHT.jpg" alt="Church of St. Nicholas fascinates visitors as the hidden gem of Fener and Balat walking tours." class="wp-image-88" srcset="https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-004-Saint-Nicholas-Church-SRHT.jpg 1024w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-004-Saint-Nicholas-Church-SRHT-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fener-balat.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-004-Saint-Nicholas-Church-SRHT-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Inside the church, the beauty of the <strong>iconostasis</strong> – a marble icon wall adorned with stunning icons – immediately catches the eye. The side walls display painted icons dating back to the <strong>18th and 19th centuries</strong>, and everything is meticulously clean and well-preserved. </p>

<p>From time to time, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C2dRobAMXaF/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">the Ukrainian Orthodox community in Istanbul</a> gathers here to hold religious services, adding to the church’s vibrant spiritual life.</p>

<p>Doka’s three children grew up within this peaceful environment and even studied at the prestigious <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phanar_Greek_Orthodox_College" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phanar Greek Orthodox College</a>, another highlight of the Fener and Balat tour.</p>

<p>As a history-focused local tour guide, I use this stop to provide a broad <strong>Istanbul history overview</strong>, complete with maps and visuals. Away from the city’s noise and crowds, guests have the chance to engage in deeper conversations about the city’s past. </p>
